Nintendo tightening content restrictions for ‘lewd’ games on Switch

The last place for uncensored lewd gaming on consoles is no more.

Of the three major consoles on the market, the Nintendo Switch was the only home for truly lewd games. While none of the games were adult games persay, a handful of titles contained uncensored topless images in the games. The games were few and far between, but the Switch was the only place you could find them.

Until now.

Gamuzumi is one of a handful of publishers that released a few titles on Nintendo’s wildly popular console. They recently had one of their games rejected from Nintendo without reason. It was thought that it could be a signal of a change in Nintendo’s censorship policies, which has proven to be the case.

Gamuzumi shared the news in a Twiter thread, below.

So, the bad news first:

We received an answer from Nintendo and now we have a confirmation that they do not allow uncensored boobs on their consoles now.

Basically, obscene content could damage the brand and infringe its policies.

This means that now all games with boobs nudity should be censored and that’s why our game (Hot Tentacles Shoot) was rejected in the first place.

Also, our recently announced game, Elves Christmas Hentai Puzzle, was also rejected due to having nudity.

That’s all the info we have so far, we’ll try to send the games without nudity for approval again and see what they say and update the thread if necessary.

It’s a shame that now, all consoles have restrictions about nudity content, this probably will affect not only our games but also games from other publishers/devs, at least, we still can release the games censored.

BUT, we still have platforms like Steam, Nutaku Games, and more where we can release the game fully uncensored for everyone! 😊

Back in January a lewd tower defence game called Duel Princess was released by quatere on Switch in multiple markets before the game was pulled from the eShop without explanation. The publisher cited “various reasons” but no official reason was ever given.

Perhaps the changes were on the horizon for a while now.

Eastasiasoft is another publisher on Nintendo Switch with lewd titles on their resume. The publisher has released several games in the Pretty Girls series, which features tabletop and card games with lewd images of anime girls as reward. While none of these games in the eShop have nudity, an uncensored physical collection was published by EAS. This version received a PEGI rating and can be imported and played in a Switch on any region.

It’s not known at this point of this content policy change applies to physical releases as well or is exclusive to the Nintendo eShop. Content standards can vary between Nintendo of America and other global markets. With the Nintendo Switch being region free, it’s possible that physical editions of a game released in markets with less conservative censorship rules could be imported to skirt the censorship.

Only time will tell.
