‘Top Gun: Maverick’ soars to the top of the Weekend Box Office

The highly anticipated sequel Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures opened at the top of the box office over the Memorial Day weekend. The sophomore Top Gun film, 36 years after the original feature opened in theatres, opened with an estimated $124 million. The film opened internationally with another estimated $109.6 million. Including Memorial Day Monday estimates, which adds another $27 million in the United States, the worldwide cume stands at $260.6 million.

Disney and Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness took in another $16.4 million in its fourth weekend. The film has taken in $370.3 million domestically in four weeks of release.

20th Century Studios’ animated feature The Bob’s Burgers Movie opened with $12.6 million. Rounding out the top five was Focus Features’ Downton Abbey: A New Era with $5.9 million in week two while Universal’s animated The Bad Guys took in another $4.6 million in its sixth week. The film has generated $116.2 million domestically.

Next weekend will see the release of Watcher from IFC Films.
