GAME REVIEW: An NPC’s Odyssey

The bite-sized new RPG An NPC’s Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch is a surprising delight. The game is admittedly very short, but it’s a lot of fun while it lasts.

This is another story of the hero gathering his friends to defeat the Devil and save the world, but our protagonist is not the hero himself, but an ordinary unlucky NPC. The reason for his journey is simple——because the hero took the money from his house! To find the hero and get money back, our journey has begun.

I was drawn to An NPC’s Odyssey for one main reason – it’s a short game. As my life gets filled with more and more, well…life, I end up with less time for gaming. As a youth I used to love RPGs. I could spend countless hours playing through a Final Fantasy game but it’s been harder to find the time for dozen hour role-playing game. This game is short in length but not in fun.

The game has a clear cut beginning and end and it won’t take you very long to complete the game. I took my time in the game, as I tend to do with role-playing games, and finished the game in just a few hours.

An NPC’s Odyssey is clever and humourous. The dialogue between the characters as well as the things that pop up when clicking on items is very tongue and cheek.

As you’re an NPC in the game you’ll find a lot of the other NPCs in the game confused that you’re talking to them. Some of them are downright annoyed when they start to talk to you like you’re the hero only to realize you’re just another NPC. It leads to some fun interactions.

Even the vendors react to you in confusion and will only sell you lower gear. Why do you need the good stuff? What are you, a hero?

The game has a fun twist ending that is a lot of fun. It’s something that I didn’t see coming but was a fun way to end the game. The game also gives you a chance to save just before the final battle so that you have an opportunity to play both end game options.

Oddly my save file corrupted after I played through my initial choice for the end game so I wasn’t able to load and try the other option.

An NPC’s Odyssey was short but pretty fun. The dialogue was funny and very tongue-in-cheek. If you’re looking for a quick traditional role-playing game with a bit of a twist this is a game that should definitely bee on your radar.
